Everyone is expected to make an attempt at pre-16th century attire at events and certain special meetings. Don’t worry, we have loaner garb available. Just contact our Chatelaine and she will help you get started.

Commonly Used Terms

Anachronism

Anything not in its proper place in time

Device

Your heraldic device (informally, your "coat of arms") is essentially your personal "logo," and identifies you the way a company's logo identifies the company. On a banner, it tells everyone you're at an event. On a shield, it tells who's on the field fighting.

Feast

A medieval style dinner consisting of several removes (courses). It is usually offered at events.

Feast Gear

Eating dishes and utensils for dinner. At most SCA events it is expected that the guests bring their own tableware for feast. Feast Gear usually consist of a plate, bowl and drinking vessel (usually made of pottery, metal or wood) and utensils. Guests may also bring tablecloths, candles and other items that might enhance the setting. If you need help, contact our Chatelaine. We have loaner feast gear available.

Garb

Pre 17th Century clothing worn to events and sometimes meetings. (Not to be confused with costumes which are worn to Halloween parties or masked balls.)

HOLD!

When you hear someone shout this, stop everything immediately. That usually means that you are in danger of getting injured. It is generally called during armored combat when the combatants get too close to the spectators, but it can also be called at anytime when there is a potentially dangerous situation developing.

Period

The SCA time period ranges generally from 600 AD until 1650 AD. The word “period” is commonly used to describe “historically accurate”.
