About the Officer Positions
Seneschal | Exchequer | Herald | Marshal | Live Weapons Marshal | A&S Officer | Chronicler | Chatelaine | Webminister | Provost
Seneschal
A seneschal has roles that other clubs would normally give to their president and secretary. A seneschal is the officer responsible for a particular regional branch, from Society-wide to Kingdom down to college. They are in charge of all the mundane issues of running the SCA, such as approval of the running of events and activities, ensuring populace numbers are sustained, and ensuring that the group/s they are in charge of are generally running effectively. They also handle a lot of the enquiries from the public.
Exchequer
The Exchequer, sometimes called "Reeve" in the SCA has functions which are similar to functions the Treasurer has in other organizations. He or she keeps track of the money that the group earns and spends and on the goods purchased with those funds.
Herald
Medieval heralds served as envoys, granted devices (variously called arms, coats of arms, and devices), oversaw the provision of heraldic trappings for funerals, and provided support at tournaments.
SCA heralds provide support at tournaments by announcing the names of the combatants, serve as the voice of the Crown during courts and as otherwise needed, make announcements at events, provide information to resolve questions of precedence and protocol, and help others to find appropriate names and armory for their chosen culture and time period.
Marshal
The Knight Marshal is the local officer responsible for heavy weapons fighting.
Live Weapons Marshal
The Live Weapons Marshal is responsible for overseeing activities involving "live" weapons, including (but not limited to) target archery, axe throwing, etc.
Arts and Science Officer
Arts and Science officers, sometimes called AnS officers, are in charge of encouraging period arts and crafts in the society. People who take on this office tend to have a general knowlege of Arts and sciences in the SCA, and if they don't know something, they will know where to point you. Go and see them if you want to know anything about anything non-combat related.
The Arts and Sciences Minister is the individual in an SCA group who coordinates educational and competion efforts of that group in the realm of Arts and Sciences.
Chronicler
The Chronicler publishes an SCA group's newsletter and keeps the populace up to date with upcoming events and meetings, advertisements, contact details for other officers and royalty, and other items of interest.
Chatelaine
A chatelaine or castellan, sometimes called Hospitaller depending on the Kingdom, is responsible for looking after the needs of new members to the SCA. Though, you will find most people look after newcomers anyway, but it's specifically their job to assist them with garb and feasting gear, if so required. They may also be in charge of storing the regalia for their group.
Webminister
The Webminister, as the name may suggest, is responsible for the production and upkeep of the shire's website.
Provost
The Provost is responsible for academic classes.
